Unlike a thermocouple extension wire, the conductors of a compensating cable are made of cost-effective substitute materials that exhibit the same thermoelectric properties as the thermocouple within the defined operating range. The designation according to DIN EN 60584-3 is "KC", identifying the Type K PTFE compensating cable as a Tolerance Class 2 cable with a limit deviation of ±2.5 degrees Celsius.

The PTFE insulation makes this cable particularly resistant to chemical exposure. Acids, alkalis, alcohols and hydrocarbons do not attack the Teflon sheathing. At the same time, the insulation operates reliably at ambient temperatures from -190 to +260 degrees Celsius, covering a significantly wider range than PVC or silicone cables.
