Type J sheathed thermocouples for industry and mechanical engineering

The type J sheathed thermocouple is one of the most commonly used temperature sensors in industrial manufacturing. The iron-constantan pairing provides a high thermoelectric voltage and enables precise measurements in the range from minus 210°C to plus 760°C. Therma Thermofühler GmbH manufactures Type J sheathed thermocouples for mechanical engineering, plastics processing, and numerous other industrial applications.

The robust design of the sheathed thermocouple protects the sensitive thermocouple from mechanical influences and aggressive media. The stainless steel sheath completely encloses the thermocouple wires and the mineral insulation. This design allows them to be used in environments where open thermocouples would not survive. Therma offers type J sheathed thermocouples in all standard diameters and custom lengths. Our experience since 1991 guarantees consistent quality with every order.

Advantages of type J thermocouples in the medium temperature range

Type J sheathed thermocouples offer several advantages over other types in the medium temperature range. The iron-constantan pairing generates a comparatively high thermoelectric voltage of about 52 microvolts per Kelvin. This high sensitivity facilitates signal processing and enables precise measurements even with simpler evaluation units.

The material costs for Type J thermocouples are lower than those for precious metal thermocouples. This makes them an economical solution for applications that do not require extreme temperatures. When selecting the right thermocouple, the temperature range, the operating environment, and the required accuracy all play a role. Type J shows good resistance in reducing atmospheres and in a vacuum. The maximum operating temperature should not exceed 760°C continuously, as iron tends to oxidize above this limit.

Areas of application for type J sheathed thermocouples in manufacturing

Type J sheathed thermocouples have become the standard in plastics processing. Injection molding machines, extruders, and thermoforming systems typically operate in a temperature range between 150°C and 400°C. Here, type J thermocouples provide reliable measurements for process control. The fast response time enables precise temperature control.

In mechanical engineering and metalworking, sheathed thermocouples type J are used in heat treatment processes. Tempering furnaces, tempering baths, and preheating stations use the sensors for process monitoring. Type J thermocouples are also used in the food industry, for example in baking and frying processes. For customized solutions, Therma manufactures sheath thermocouples with special sheath materials and connection configurations according to your specifications.

Order type J sheath thermocouples in various lengths

Therma offers type J sheath thermocouples in flexible configurations. We manufacture the length according to your specifications, from a few centimeters to several meters. Diameters from 0.5 mm to 6 mm are available. Thinner sheaths react more quickly to temperature changes and are suitable for dynamic measurement tasks. Larger diameters offer higher bending stiffness for installation in systems.

The measuring point can be insulated, grounded, or free. For most industrial applications, we recommend the insulated version, which minimizes electrical interference. You can choose the sheath material to suit the application environment. Stainless steel 1.4301 is suitable for most applications. Alternative materials are available for higher temperatures or corrosive media. Thermal cables type J connect the sheath thermocouples to the evaluation electronics and ensure error-free signal transmission.
